The Michigan Soldier's Aid Society did a wonderful job of creating a little booklet of 1860 Beauty supplies and how to make them. They presented the booklet with a spa day for women at Hastings last year.

Three steps to making your own skin cream:
- Melt the waxes and gently heat the oils, slowly pour the oils into the waxes beating constantly.
- Warm your scented water to the same temperature as the waxes and oils and add this gradually to the wax and oil mixtures, beating all the time. Leave to cool.
- When cool and creamy, beat in any essential oils that you would like to add. Spoon into prepared jars and label.
- Record any failures for the next time you make your creams. Good luck!
Sage Astringent:
Sage is a wonderful for oily skins; this astringent will help remove oil from skin without drying it out.
- 4 tbs dried sage
- 6 tbs vodka
- 1/4 tsp borax
- 3 tbs witch hazel
- 10 drops glycerin
- Macerate the sage in the alcohol for 2 weeks and then strain.
- Dissolve the borax in the witch hazel. Stir into the alcohol. Mix in the glycerin and pour into a bottle with a tight fitting lid. shake before each use.
Remember to record your successes and failures!
